NAVY STRIKES AGAIN
GENOA HEAVILY BOMBARDED Many Objectives Damaged INCLUDING POWER STATIONS AND OIL INSTALLATIONS THREE HUNDRED TONS OF SHELLS START GREAT FIRES An Admiralty conununique, transmitted by the 8.8. C., states that the battle-cruiser Renown, the battleship Malaya, the aircraft-carrier Ark Royal and the Sheffield, with light forces, bombarded military objectives in and around Genoa. Over 300 tons of shells were fired. The Ansolda electrical works and boiler works were heavily hit and large fires started. T he main power station was severely damaged and set on fire. The dry dock, warehouses and harbour works round the inner harbour were hit, besides the main oil fuel installations and tanks, a number of supply ships and the main goods yards of the railway system. Fleet Air Arm aircraft dropped many tons of high explosive and incendiary bombs on the A.N.I.P. oil refinery and other targets in the vicinty. This refinery is one of the most important in Italy, Other naval aircraft attacked an aerodrome and railway junction, the latter being on one of the principal routes of Northern Italy. Two Italian aircraft which attempted to interfere were shot down. One Swordfish plane is missing but no other casualties were suffered by the British forces in this most successful operation. Though this is the Navy’s first attack on Genoa, the place has been bombed four times by the R.A.F. The British Navy has once again proved its ability to operate in the seas all round Italy. Only a few days ago the Navy made another sweep in the Mediterranean without meeting any opposition either from the damaged Italian Navy or the much-vaunted German dive-bombers which have been sent to help the Italians. Genoa, located only about 100 miles from the French Riviera, is one of the biggest manufacturing and shipbuildingcentres in Northeim Italy. It has a population of 600,000.
