FATAL CRASH

A War Councillor and former Minister of the Navy. Admiral Mineo Osumi. was apparently killed in an aeroplane crash in South China on Wednesday during an inspection tour. The Navy announced that searching planes on Thursday discovered a plane which had crashed in the Huancyanshan Mountains near the Sikiang River. There were 10 people on board the plane, including also Rear-Admiral Kikijiro Suga, three other officers and four members of the crew. A rescue party reached the wreckage but refused to give any further information. CHINESE REPORT AEROPLANE SHOT DOWN BY GUERILLAS. CHUNGKING. February 8. ! Documents revealing that Admiral i Osumi. accompanied by his staff, was ' proceeding to Hainan to assume the' post of Commander-in-Chief of the ‘ joint fleet in the South Seas, were j seized by Chinese when his aeroplane I was shot down by Chinese guerillas j near Chungshan. Altogether nine! bodies were found in the plane, in- ■ eluding Admiral Osumi, Rear-Admiral Suga and three commanders.
