Mr. J. Mutter, of Featherston, who underwent an operation in the Greytown Hospital on Saturday is reported to be making satisfactory progress toward recovery.

Mr. Charlton Edgar, who has been on the stall of King Edward Technical College. Dunedin, for the last 10 years as an instructor in drawing and painting, has been appointed head of the Dunedin Art School. Mr J. L. Murray has recovered sufficiently to be able to leave the private hospital in which he was undergoing treatment in Masterton and is recouperating at the residence of his daughter. Mrs Donald James. Rangitumau.

The Hon. F. Jones. Minister of Defence. accompanied by the , mayor of Wanganui, Mr. W. J. Rogers, and Mr. Cotterill, M.P. for Wanganui, inspected territorial units in eamp in Wanganui on Saturday. Later Mr. Jones and the mayor attended a Labour Parly picnic at Aramoho Park. Mr. J. Roberts, Wellington. and Mr. Frost, M.P. for New Plymouth, were also present at the picnic. Mr. Jones returned to Wellington late on Saturday afternoon.

The death occurred last Friday evening of Mr Francis Bennett, Khandallah, aged 81. Born in Durham, England, Mr. Bennett come, to New Zealand and took up teaching in Wellington in 1879. He was stationed at the old Karori School for a short period, folowed by a few months at Tinui School. After being assistant at the Willis Street School. Wellington, he was appointed headmaster of Johnsonville School in 1883. He then became first assistant at Newtown and later headmaster at Eketahuna. when that town was the railway terminus. He was also headmaster at Carterton. Karori and Borhampore. Mr. Bennett was for six years a member of the Wellington Hospital Board. He was a foundation member of the Carterton and Karori Bowling Clubs. Mr. Bennett married a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Barnes, Robinsort. His wife predeceased him by two years. He is survived by two sons and three daughters.

A large attendance representative of every section of the community—Government, municipal, educational, commercial and others—filled the Cambridge Terrace Congregational Church, Wellington, to overflowing on Saturday morning for the memorial service to the late Mr. Thomas Forsyth, former city councillor and member of the House of Representatives. The service <at the church was conducted bv the Rev. A. Muriel. M.C.. 8.A.. assisted by the Rev. H. Newell, of the Terrace Congregational Church. At the graveside. Mr. Muriel had the assistancee of the Rev. C. Hoskin. The chief mourners were Dr. John Forsyth. Masterton (son). Misses Jean. Jessie and Minnie Forsyth (daughters), and Miss Forsyth (sister). The pall-bearers were "the mayor, Mr. Hislop and Mr. M. F. Luckie <representing the city council), Messrs. A. T. Emerson (Victoria Bowling Chib), E. Kellow Institute of Accountants) and T. L. Cocks and W. G. Lewis (Congregational Church).
