NAZI SWINDLE
“THE PEOPLE’S CAR.” PRICE COLLECTED BUT NO DELIVERY. It was in the bravo old days when the gangsters of Chicago were at the height of their power that the phrase was invented about their victims being “taken for a ride." but it seems to have been left for the gangsters of the Third Reich to devise the longest ride of all in connection with them unscrupulous operations. It is reported from neutral sources that German workmen arc still paying their five marks a week for that "people’s car” which was introduced—on paper —in 1938 as such an unparalleled boon for the working classes. Under the instructions of the famous Dr. Ley of the “Strength through Joy” movement they started paying then and apparently they have been paying ever since. About five completed samples of the promised boon were put on show in Germany shortly before the present, war started but none of those who have been subscribing so diligently has yet had his joy-wagon delivered; and. if he did. presumably there would be no petrol for him to run it on. And yet the dupes still keep on paying for the ride that never comes. It is hard to say which is the bigger marvel —the docility of the victims or the sustained effrontery of the gangsters.—" Manchester Guardian."
