ATTACK ON CONVOY
THREE ENEMY BOMBERS SHOT DOWN
NIGHT RAIDS ON BRITAIN.
WIDESPREAD BUT MOSTLY INEFFECTIVE. Three enemy bombers engaged in an attack on a convoy off the south-east coast of Britain were destroyed yesterday, the 8.8. C. states. Three others are reported to have been destroyed, but this is not yet officially confirmed. Last night’s enemy air operations over Britain were widespread, but mostly ineffective. The attack was concentrated on an East Coast port, but on account of the strength of the defences few of the raiders got through. Bombs were dropped in East Anglia and in the east Midlands. A few bombs were dropped in the London area. Incendiary bombs caused a certain amount of damage, but the fires were quickly put out. The number of casualties reported from al! areas is not large. A Norwegian merchant vessel is given the credit for bringing down a German aircraft recently off the coast of Cornwall.
An Air Ministry and Ministry of Home Security communique reports enemy air activity over the east and south-east coasts yesterday, but very few enemy aircraft penetrated inland. Bombs were dropped in North-East Scotland and nt a place in England. There was no damage and there were no casualties. Yesterday morning an enemy bomber was shot down by British fighters.
