Art Union Extended. The closing date for the building section, motor car and motor cyclo art union has been extended to March. 15. The drawing will now take nittec on March 21. Returned Soldier Membership. The financial membership of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association on December 31. 1940. was 34.272. an increase of 7822 on that for the corresponding date of the previous year. It is expected that membership will reach 40.000 by March 31. Not Covered By I nsu rance. Holder of fire insurance policies in New Zealand may not till be aware that, if their property is destroyed or damaged by fire as a result, cither directly or indirectly, of enemy action, their loss is uncovered. Perusal of the conditions printed on the back of the policy will, however, make this plain. Rotary Confe-cnce. The annual conference of the Rotary movement in New Zealand will bo held in Wellington on March 11 and 12 next. It will be purely a business conference The name of the district gov-ernor-designate. in succession to Mr D. A. Ewen, will be announced at the conference.
South Island Electric Power. There is not likely to be a serious shortage of power in the South Island, according to official calculations, unless an unusually dry winter is experienced. The use of the new generating units at Waittiki has enabled the storage of sufficient water to be made at the other supply points—Lake Coleridge. Monowai and Waipori—to nice'. expected needs.
Idle Along Sailing Championship, By winning the first three races, the Wellington crew has won the Idle Along sailing championship for 1941. The second and third races were decided at Lyttelton yesterday, Wellington winning the morning race after a close contest with Canterbury, and winning the afternoon race easily. Canterbury and Nelson were the two crews which showed the next best performances.
No Trace of Escaped Prisoner.
In spite of strenuous efforts by police from the Hamilton and Te Awamutu districts, no trace has been found of Richard Humphries, the young prisoner who escaped while being conveyed from Auckland to the Waikcria Borstal Institute. Humphreys was under the escort of an Auckland constable, and is believed to have jumped from the south-bound express train between Frankton Junction and Te Awamutu. Fire on Liner. Serious damage by fire and water, the full extent of which will not be known till a survey has been made, was caused yesterday in a large overseas motor-liner b’erthed at the northern end of Aotea Quay. Wellington. The fire, which broke out suddenly in the ship’s engineroom, burnt furiously for a time and the vessel was enveloped in a dense cloud of grey smoke. It was two hours before the outbreak was quelled. The cause of the tire is not known definitely. It is stated that] a great flash was seen behind theship's oilfired lonkey-boiler, and in a I few minutes a fierce lire was raging. I Duty of Rotarians. “We must act and make up our|

H Stew.n-t, when drawing attention to the following utterance by the president of the Auckland Rotary Club, Mr F. Winstone: "Rotary calls for service. Few of our members will be called on to serve overseas, but there are many avenues of service al our doors, and it behoves us all to answer the call to duty in whatever form it may come.” Mr Stewart said there was no question but that members owed a debt to Rotary.
