FEILDING SHOW
OPENING DAY MARRED BY WET WEATHER. CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS. <By Telegraph—Press Association.! FEILDING. February 4. Though the total of stock entered in the thirty-seventh annual show of tne Feilding Agricultural and Pastoral Association. which opened its two-day session today in dull and at times wet weather, showed a decrease from 1743 last year to 1438. there was no lowering of the quality of the stock customarily exhibited at this fixture. Favoured by a good season, all the animals came forward in the pink of condition and competition in most classes was very keen. The steady decrease in horse entries during the last 10 years was again shown when the total in this section fell from 324 last year to 283. but cattle showed an increase from 351 to 380. Jerseys were the strongest classes, with 93 entries, fat cattle coming next with 87 and Friesians third with 31.
Peculiarly for the Feilding district, sheep showed a large decrease, from 914 in 1940 to 664. entries in every breed revealing a drop. As usual the Romney classes headed the list with 197 entries, offering the customary exhibition of splendid specimens of the breed, mainly from the well-known Feilding district flocks.
