CARTERTON
SERIOUS FLOODS LARGE AREA OF LAND SUBMERGED. ("Times-Age” Special.) The heavy rain that fell continuousin the Tararua ranges during the twenty-four hours caused heavy floods in all the rivers and creeks in the district. The Mangaterere Stream, backed up by the Waiohine River, which carried the worst flood for several years, overflowed its banks on the northern side of the Waiohine bridge and at three o'clock yesterday afternoon the water was in places 12 inches to two feet deep across the road. This depth of water was a menace to the owners of small cars who attempted to ford the waters and, consequently, stopped in mid-stream with the water running through the engines. They were towed to safety by largei - cars. Swamp Road was impassable, the water being so deep that it was dangerous to even attempt to get to the main highway. All the low lying land was submerged feet deep in water. Mr Jas. Callister was again a heavy sufferer through the flood, as was Mr Ticehurst. At 9 o'clock last night these two homesteads were completely surrounded by water. The flood in the Waiohine River is estimated to have been the highest for the last eight or nine years. During yesterday afternoon the water was flowing over the stop bank opposite the properties of Messrs Cadwallader and Feist, and the whole of the low lying country was under water. On the northern side of the bridge the land from the bend of the road to the bridge was a sheet of water. At Dalefield the Maungaterere broke its banks and water crossed the road at the properties of Messrs K. G. Fairbrother, and C. Zillwood. The bottom end of Lincoln Road was also flooded. A settler at Swamp Road informed the "Times-Age" representative that it was fortunate that no wind was blowing or very serious damage may have been done by the flood. In many place? only the tops of fences could be seen. HOME GUARD WEEKLY PARADE.
There was a large attendance at the weekly parade of the Carterton Home Guard last evening. The men were lined up opposite the Showground gates and after the roll call and preliminary instructions given, the men adjourned to the Showgrounds where they were drilled. They were afterwards further drilled in the King’s Theatre. Good progress is being made by the Guard and the instructors are pleased with their progress.
