FUTURE OF ETHIOPIA
RECOGNITION liV BRITAIN AS INDEPENDENT STATE. STATEMENT BY MR EDEN In the House of Commons, the 8.8. C. reports, Mr Anthony Eden, British Foreign Secretary, made a statement on Britain's attitude towards the independence of Abyssinia. He said the British Government welcomed the re-establish-ment of an independent Ethiopian State and recognised the claim of Haile Selassie to the throne.
The Emperor had indicated to the British Government that he would stand in need of outside assistance and guidance and the British Government accepted that view. It considered that arrangements for the economic assistance and political guidance of Abyssinia should be made under an international agreement. Britain had no territorial ambitions in Abyssinia.
In the meantime, Mr Eden added, the conduct of military operations called for temporary measures of guidance ami control. These would be curried on in consultation with the Emperor and would be brought to an end as soon as the situation permitted.
