Hawke’s Bay Regiment Parade. The first parade of the year of the First Battalion. Hawke's Bay Regiment, will be held on Monday evening at 7.30 o'clock at the Masterion Drill Hall. Dress will be full equipment and gaiters. Sailing Contest. The Wellington crew won the first race in the interprovincial Idle Along sailing contest at Lyttelton yesterday. West Coast made a good showing in the early part of the race, but did no good later when a strong south-wester-ly came up. Nelson finished second after a very creditable performance and Canterbury were third. Fire at Freezing Works. A fire did about .£2OO worth of damage to drying and locker-rooms accommodating men's working clothing at Tomoana freezing works yesterday. No serious damage was done to the j vital portion of the works. The fire! apparently started in a drying-room on; the top Floor of the main building. This> room is used for drying workers'! clothes by means of steam pipes. Negligent Driving. A fine of £lO and disqualification from obtaining a driver’s licence for a period of five years wore imposed at the Timaru Supreme Court yesterday, on Anthony John Johns, tractor driver.! Ashburton, who had pleaded guilty I and appeared for sentence on a chargej of having negligently driven a car. i thereby causing death.

Sly Grog Seller Sent to Gaol. In the Timaru Supreme Court yesterday. Archibald John Templeton, Ashburton, pleaded guilty to five charges of having sold liquor without a licence. The case had been set down for trial but accused altered his plea. Accused was sentenced to three months' gaol on each charge, the sentences to be cumulative.

N.C.O. Classes. The n.c.o. classes of the Home Guard; and E.P.S. unit paraded at the Drill i Hall last night when instruction in! At the criminal session of the Dunedin Supreme Court which commenced yesterday the grand jury returned a true bill against William Meehan Oamaru. on a charge of attempted murder at Oamaru of George Robert Edwards and Frederick Henry McAuley. Accused was also charged with committing bodily harm with a rifle. Tito trial of accused was then commenced. the evidence given being similar to that in the lower court.

Salvationist's Appeal Dismissed. Appearing in a Salvation Army bandsman’s uniform. Herbert Roy Dutton aged 23. insurance agent, appealed on the ground of conscientious objection before the No. 4 Armed Forces Appeal Board in Wellington yesterday. j He said he had been a local officer and bandsman for six years and engaged in young people's and bands' work. 1-Ie was prepared to devote his whole time to the Salvation Army for the; duration of the war.
