BLOOD TRANSFUSION
MANY DONORS WANTED IN BRITAIN. ADDRESS BY PRINCESS ROYAL. iRy Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright RUGBY. February 2. In a broadcast today the Princess Royal initiated a new campaign for blood donors throughout the country to supplement the scheme that is already operating in London. In its inception the appeal calls for 100.000 donors from the east and west ridings of Yorkshire. Her Highness revealed that during recent heavy raids on London 11 per cent, of the casualties admitted to hospital required transfusions. In some cases the figure was as high at 35 per cent. She mentioned a new advance which is revolutionising the treatment of shock caused by wounds—-the use of plasma, which is the liquid part of the blood remaining after the red and white corpuscles have been removed. A transfusion for a single patient might require plasma from 10 more donors, she said. It was. vitally necessary, therefore, to enrol as rnan}.’ more donors as were now available on the exist:ing panels. His proposals are: —Meetings to be conducted by a committee, the personnel to be approved by the chief secretary No salaries or wages tn be paid to officials.
