AIR ATTACK ON BRITISH ; FISHERMEN ENEMY BOMBER BEATEN OFF . LATER CRASHES IN SEA. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. January 31. German airmen who make brutal attacks on British fishing vessels are being given cause to regret their actions. This is due to the efficiency with which the fishermen are handling the defensive armaments with which the German methods have led to their being provided. The trawlers Charmouth and Rattrey were peacefully fishing when they were attacked by a large Messerschmitt. The airman circled over the trawlers and —it is beyond doubt — established that the vessels were fishing. The aircraft then attacked, but the bombs missed both trawlers. The aircraft then circled again and attacked with machine-guns and cannon. Both trawlers fought back vigorously. The aircraft was hit repeatedly and finally driven off damaged and thought to be on fire. Though the trawlers made no claim to have shot down this plane, it crashed into the sea some miles away.
