The ratlin announced rhe formation of a "People’s Committee." which is a rival to Marshal Petain’s National : Union. The new committee ■ favours full collaboration with Germany. | GERMAN DESIGN NEW MOVE TO STRENGTHEN HOLD. j MEN OF PRO-NAZI LEANINGS USED. LONDON. February 2. The formation of the new party is interpreted as Germany’s latest move to strengthen her hold on j France. The announcement was originally made in Berlin, and the whole scheme bears the stamp of ! German design. I The programme envisaged for I France is in line with the now familiar | German aspirations in Europe, and calls for the acknowledgment of Ger | man leadership. The men chosen are ! well known for their pro-Nazi leanings. The party has already bitterly attacked Marshal Petain's Foreign Minister. M. Flandin. WEYGAND BROADCASTS APPEAL MADE FOR FAITH & CONFIDENCE. ALGIERS. February J. j General Weygand, Vichy French administrator in Africa, in a broadcast appealed to French North Africa to collaborate loyally in the reconstruction under Marshal Petain. He warned that action would be taken against all propagandists. "We will build a now Africa in which there will be no place for politicians." he said. "You will hear one day from your chief. What we want from you is faith and confidence.” PARIS POLICE CHIEF ARRESTED AND ACCUSED. i PETAIN’S NEW COUNCIL. ; PARIS. February 2. M. Roger Lanceron, Prefect of the Paris Police, has been removed from his post and charged with being a supporter of General de Gaulle. His secretary is said to have been arrested on charges connected with British, propaganda. A store of firearms is reported to have been discovered in at least one section of Paris. In Vichy it is understood that Mar-! shal Petain’s new National Council will meet at Clermont Ferrand at the end of the month. The first business will be the nomination of a President. Vice-Presidents and secretaries by Marshal Petain.
