PATRIOTIC EFFORT BALES IN STACK OF HAY. (“Times-Age” Special.) Some time before the close of the old year, Mr Geo. W. Busby, of Belvedere Street, bought some standing hay from the Carterton Racing Club. The gmss was cut and harvested in tine wether and was put into a stack •in readiness for the hay press. Then the owner, with a view to assisting the patriotic funds, decided to invite interested persons to guess how many bales would be pressed from the stack. His energies resulted in 200 guesses being taken, no person being allowed too have the same number as another. The winner was to receive part of the net proceeds and the balance would go towards the Carterton patriotic funds. The number of bales was 419 and the person having this number has donated his prize to the patriotic funds. As a result the fund will bene-' fit by the full amount of the takings.l Mr Geo. W.
