"Information from the interior of Germany indicates that an attempt to invade the British Isles may begin at any moment, said Colonel Knox (Secretary for the Navy) testifying before the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee. He said he had heard authoritatively that the Germans were now studying weather conditions for the purpose of seizing the first available good spell in whic hto attack. ■'All the signs point to a verv grave crisis within sixty to ninety days.” he said. "If the attempt comes, there are strong indications that gas will be used on a large scale. ’ Colonel Knox throughout emphasised his belief that if Germany were victorious she wotdd attack the United States ns soon as she could accumulate strength. "We cun keep a non-Ainerican military power from our hemisphere only by control of the seas.” Colonel Htiox declared. He described Colonel Lindbergh’s proposal for a negotiated peace as a wild fancy. During questions. Senator Guy Gillette asked: "Isn’t it a fact that American naval strategy never contemplated the defence of the Philippines?” to which Colonel Knox replied: "We have admitted that its defence would be difficult, but we have never brushed it aside." He attributed the present state of the world to Britain’s failure in 1931 to support the United Stales in sustaining the Nine Power Treaty, but added that it would be unwise to withhold aid to Britain now because of that earlier incident. He insisted that the Bill would not effect American convoys, since the President already had power to order convoys at any time hr desired.
