ATTAINMENT Ob' CITY STATUS OFFICIAL CELEBRATION. REM ARK ABLE INCREASE IN POPULATION. (By Teleiuaph—Press Association ’ WELLINGTON, This Day. Lower Hutt, which, having a population of over 20.000. has officially become a city, today celebrated that event and also the jubilee of tne Borough. The council met this morning and the proclamation of city status was read by the Mayor (Mr J. W. Andrews) who was presented with a new mayoral chain. This was followed by the official opening of the new scenic reserve. Jubilee Park, and also of the beautiful fernery presented by the Mayor. A luncheon is being held this afternoon for early residents. The afternoon programme includes a protes-imi and pageant. A congratulatory message was sent by the Prime Minister ‘Mr Eraser' to the Mayor and the Government was represented at the luncheon by Mr Parry (Minister of Internal Affairs), who, in an address, mentioned ’hat in 1938 the population was 8,000. Probably no other place in New Zealand could compare with the rate <>f population increase tn Lowci Hutt The council had been pursuing a clear-cut and far-sighted town planning policy for many years.
