No Bankruptcies in January. Wairarapa had a "clean sheet" in January as far as bankruptcies were concerned. Slygrog Selling. Robert Montgomery, aged about 70. was charged in the Ashburton Magistrates' Court yesterday with having illegally sold liquor and fined £lO. Mr. Morgan, S.M., warned him that another offence would mean imprisonment in accordance with the intention started last court today. Giant Sunflower. An oversize in sunflower plants is to be seen at the residence of Mr. R. Judd, Essex Street. Masterton. The plant stands 12 feet high and the flower head is now opening. It was grown from seed bv’ Miss J. Gough, who states that the plant has made particularly rapid growth in the past week or so. after the recent rain. East Coast Mounted Rifles. The advance party of the Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles is proceeding to Foxton on Monday to make preliminary arrangements for the arrival of the main body of Wairarapa men on February 12. The unit is entering camp for a three months' training course. Sanders Cup Race. Sailed in a fresh south-westerly breeze, the second Sanders Cup race at Auckland yesterday was also won by the Auckland boat Caress by two minutes two seconds from the Canterbury contender Ajax. Wellington’s Tassie was third, one minute two seconds astern of Ajax, and Wampa (Otago) fourth. The light crew of the South Canterbury boat, Gallina, had trouble holding her up and were again last. New Cool Store. Building operations are proceeding rapidly on the new cool store which is being erected in Hastings to handle the Hawke's Bay fruit crop. The cost of the building will probably be in the vicinity of £70,000, and it will provide a floor space of 80.000 square feet, with a capacity for 60.000 cases of fruit in cool store. The laying of the foundations is at present providing work for 50 men. and once the superstructure, which will contain 500.000 super feet of timber, is started, the number of men engaged will be increased to 150. Labour is at present obtainable, but when the number of hands is increased, it may be necessary to make a call on other places. Prices of Fencing Wire. The Makara-Hult Valley provincial executive of the Farmers' Union, al its 'monthly meeting this week, discussed the position with regard to fencing wire, and alarm was expressed at the position indicated in the statement made recently by Mr. W. A lorns that the margins which traders would receive for handling wire were to i;< C' nsiderably increased. 1: was felt by the meeting that the Government should lose no time m setting out exactly what the position w:i<. and the following resolution was passed: "That this meeting requests the Minister of Supply to make a public statement on 'lie question of the price ' fencing wire, and the margins which are to be al! wed the variou- n.'.ere-t-. under the Governent’s new scheme.
