BOWLING PRAGNELL CUP COMPETITION. ("Times-Age” Special.) A game for the Pragnell Cup was played on the Carterton green last evening between W. Sorensen (holder) and T. Connolly (challenger, Greytown). Sorensen, who played very steady bowls, got a big lead on his opponent and on the 11th end had scored 21 to Connolly’s 2. On the 19th end when the game finished the score was in favour of the holder. This is the seventh time Sorensen has stalled off a challenge. In the championship singles. Barber beat Newbould, 18/15. AND MRS CAMPBELL. Last evening members of the Carterton V.A.D. class paid a surprise visit to Dr. and Mrs R. N. Campbell at their home in Rhodes Street. Carterton. to bid them farewell prior to their departure for Wellington, where the former will go into camp at Fort Dorset for the duration of the war. Mrs Campbell and her family will reside in Wellington. Miss M. Smart, on behalf of the V.A.D. class, expressed regret that Dr. and Mrs Campbell were leaving Carterton and would no longer be associated with the classes, which they had controlled for a long time past. Dr. Campbell had given many lectures to the class and Mrs Campbell had on all occasions made the necessary arrangements for them. Both had gone to considerable trouble and had given a great deal of their time to the classes. Members had greatly appreciated their efforts. Miss Smart, on behalf of < the girls’ class, asked Dr. and Mrs Campbell to accept a small gift as a token of their appreciation of their services. She expressed the hope that ' both would return to Carterton when the war was over. Dr. and Mrs Campbell suitably returned thanks. — Personal Items. Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Brown, of Moreton Road, Carterton, have left on a motor tour of the North Island. Dr. and Mrs W. J. C. Wells, who j have been on holiday, have returned to Carterton. During the absence of Dr. R. N. In a clear sky the two comets were visible to the naked eye very clearly last evening. The new comet does not display the brilliance of a week ago. Services Not Required. During the burning off of grass on the railway line in the vicinity of the Carterton Baths, yesterday, and which was being attended to by the railway employees, a resident fearing a serious outbreak rang for the fire brigade. Members of the brigade were quickly on the spot, but finding their services not required returned the engine to the station. It would be a wise step not to call firemen away from their work unless it was absolutely necessary. Social Gathering at Parkvale. Tomorrow evening the Parkvale Hall should be filled, the occasion being a "parcel evening” and dance tendered to Miss Jean Edwards on the eve of her marriage. Million Pound Fund.
