LIFE IN BRITAIN
RATIONING MAKES LITTLE DIFFERENCE. POSITION AT BRISTOL. Downend. Bristol. j Dear Grace: On the whole, rationing hasn't made a great deal of difference to vtir moae i ci life. Sugar is the thing to be most economical with and where we can use saccharine tablets which are quite a. good substitute. tnough they haven't the nutritive value of sugar. Mum ; hopes to make her Christmas puddings j and cakes this week, while wo still . have plenty of the necessary ingredii ents. There has been little damage done : the town of Bristol 1 am glad to say ! . . . , Of course, the suburb of Filton has had the most damage, and as this : is al! built near the aeroplane works, i it was to be expected. . . . j One of our staff here is a warden, i This chappie had been up twice on a ' Saturday night, and went home at the i second all-clear intending to have a | good long sleep, it being a Sunday. But • no. sirens sounded at. 7 o'clock and he i had to gel up. Being resourceful, howi ever, ho just hops out of bed. puts on his tin hat. opens the window and i bows his whistle, and duty having been j done goes back to bed. A warden was patrolling his sector I one evening and noticed lights through i a glass roof at the back of a house. He ; knocks and is answered by the lady of ■ the house. "Would you please take I steps to make the blackout al the back | of your house more effective?” said he. j The lady shuffles back through the i darkness of the passage, an electric I light switch clicks, and Iter voice says: ‘ You must finish, your bath in the ! dark a man here wants to know why i the light's on.' .... As the Purchase Tax has now been imposed. I guess we j shall all be buying; less, and making do ■ with our last year's clothes. Shoes and silk stockings are much dearer, but I guess we shrill have to buy these whatever the price. Edith.
