SITTING AT CARTERTON I BREACHES OF MOTOR REGULATIONS. DRUNKEN DRIVER FINED i ("Times-Age" Special.) .At the Carterton Magistrate's Court I yesterday before Mr H P. Lawry. S.M.. A. J. W. Blake was charged by the police with having been found in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor ear on January 9 in Garrison Street. Carterton. Accused pleaded not guilty and was represented by Mr D. I- Taverner. The case for the police was conducted by Sergegnt Doggett Mas ter ton. Constable Gillies stated that at 3.45 p.m. on January 9 he found accused in ' a state of intoxication, and as a result arrested him and took him to the police station. At the police station he called Dr. R. N. Campbell to examine accused. The doctor, owing to having a medical ease in the country, did not arrive until fully an hour had elapsed. Two full bottle of beer were found in the car. When accosted accused was in such a condition that he forbade him 1 to drive the car. j Dr. Campbell said accused was showI ing signs of having consumed liquor, j Ho put him through the usual tests. I some of which he performed well i while in others he failed. He considerI cd the case a border line one. I Mr Taverner suggested that Blake : was not markedly under the influence i of liquor. His client admitted that he j had taken four or five beers. The case ; was a border line on?. i Constable Williams said that he I formed the opinion that Blake was un- ; der the influence of liquor. i Mr Taverner, in addressing the J i Bench., pointed out that accused had driven to Garrison Street to visit a : friend. He was not in the car when ; the constable arrived. If was only from j what the constable saw outside the car ' that lie arrested him. There had been ' trouble al the meat works and seven j ! men as a result walked off the job. Of l ■ this number Blake and three others j i left for Carterton and had three or I I four drinks each. j A. J. W. Blake said that seven ent-; ployees had walked off their job owing to a disagreement. He and two others went back to work but were not allowed to start till next day. They then went to Carterton and had a few : drinks, after which he drove to see a ' friend in Garrison Street. He experienced no difficulty in driving the car. Constable Williams was recalled and stated that accused wtis certainly not able to drive the car. His Worship said that ho would fine accused £lO with costs £2 2s. His licence would be suspended for nine months and he would be given one month in which to pay the fine. No Lights or Fitness Warrant. W. N. Burcher was charged by the Carterton Police with having operated a motor van in High Street. Carterton on November 27 when he was not the holder of a warrant of fitness; also with having driven the van after dark without lights. The Magistrate took a serious view of both charges and on each accused was fined £2 with 10s costs. Sequel to Motor Collision. On October 12 last a head-on motor collision occurred on the CartertonMasterlon Main Highway at 3.10 a.m. between a truck and a motor car. The sequel was heard in Court when N. B. F. Sutherland and George F. Edwards were charged by the police that I on October 12 last they drove theiri respective vehicles without disc carej and attention. Sergt. Doggett Masterton. conducted the ease for the prosecution and Mr H. H. Daniell appeared for Edwards and Mr Lawson t Featherston > for Sutherland. He took measureI merits on the roadway where the accii dent occurred near the Carterton race- ‘ course on lhe crown of the road. The I men in the car were injured. Edwards ' who was also hurt, said that he was ‘•going to the freezing works and would ' be travelling about 25 miles per hour ■ He had his lights burning. It was a ; dark morning.
