ADRIFT ON HOME-MADE RAFT CARRIED OUT TO SEA. FROM TARANAKI BEACH. iFly Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH. January 27. Fears for the safety of Mr and Mrs C. Oakes, of Hawcra. arc entertained as a result of a home-made raft on which they were floating at Ohawe bench near Hawcra being washed out to sea. Information to hand late tonight is meagre, but it is understood that Mr and Mrs Oakes wore on their raft in the sea at about 8 o’clock tonight when it drifted away from the beach in the gathering darkness. No boat or boat’s crow were available on the beach and as it result no assistance could be given.
The S.S. Hawera which was en route from Patea to Wellington was communicated with and was diverted westward, arriving near the scene at about 11 p.m. when it was blowing hard and raining A launch is standing bv at. New Plymouth and two planes will leave Ohakea at down to conduct a search.
