WAIR.AR.APA ASSOCIATION GATHERING OPENING DAY'S PLAY. i MRS N. L. BEETHAM ELIMINATED. Tb.e standard of lawn tennis which has been built up over many years in ' Wairarapa championship was well ■ maintained yesterday, when after a ! fr ur-hour delay, this year's tournament j opened in bitterly cold, threatening weather at the United Club courts. Masterton. Weeks of dry. sunny weather had hardened the courts and the heavy rain overnight caused little nn.re than a surface stickiness which slowed up play. Despite war conditions there arc the usual good entries which include some first rank Wellington and Hawke's Bay players. Consistently accurate play by Mrs, J. Kennedy ' Lower Hutt) caused the unexpected defeat of Mrs. N. T. Beetham. who was not at her strong-hitting best under yesterday's conditions. Mackie and Falloon put up a good fight against Hawksworth. and Hamilton in a men's championship double, one of the last games of the day. Fine recoveries and accurate lobbing, particularly by Mackie, forced Hawksworth and Hamilton into errors. Hawksworth, R. J. D. Sharpe and R. Ferkins had wins in the singles and in the women's section Miss M. Kerr. Mrs. H. D. Kennedy and Miss Z. Castle were successful visiting players. There was a good attendance of spectators who defeated the weather with overcoats and rugs. Results of yesterday's play are: — CHAMPIONSHIPS MEN'S SINGLES. First Round.
