THREAT OF ANARCHY

EXTENSION OF DISORDERS

IN RUMANIA

MILITARY DICTATORSHIP.

ESTABLISHED BY GENERAL ANTONESCU.

(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, January 22. The Belgrade correspondent of

the Associated Press says that, aci cording to diplomatic advices from I Bucharest, severe fighting between ! the Rumanian army and members I of the Iron Guard spread last night

to many parts of the country. The Premier. General Antonescu, is establishing a military dictatorship in an effort to control the situation. Iron Guard members in the past month have apparently established secret arsenals in northern Rumania.

The Budapest correspondent of the British United Press says that, accord- ! ing to diplomatic circles. General Ani lonescu ordered the elimination of Iron | Guard members from the police force, i whereupon street fighting began. | Troops were sent to clear out Iron i Guard men who had barricaded themi selves in police headquarters. The Iron I Guards sniped from the roofs when the I troops were ordered to attack. i Meanwhile, other members of the ' Iron Guard are reported to have converged on the scene from all parts of Bucharest, after which the army sent two tanks against the demonstrators. The tanks fired, killing two demonstrators when the latter attempted to damage the tanks' mechanism. The latest reports state that conditions are aproaching anarchy in many places in Rumania. Few facts are leaking out from the fog of unrest in Rumania, but apparently General Antonescu has dismissed the Minister of the Interior, General Petrovicescu. who has been replaced by General Popescu, the military commandant in Bucharest. Reasons given for the removal of General Petrovicescu : range from an allegation that he order- ! ed the police to support the malcontent Iron Guard in an attempt at a coup d'etat, to a German news agency statement that his dismissal resulted from his failure to enforce order after the murder of the German officer, Major Doering, and also because he did not order a guard to be provided for the German military mission. The present disposition of Rumanians to shoot at high-placed officials is underlined by the German news agency statement that a man forced his way into the office of Colonel OrescheauJ director of the Rumanian railways, and! tired several pistol shots, wounding the colonel. The Rumanian wireless on Tuesday announced a curfew in Bucharest. The { population were requested to be indoors before 10 o'clock because after that hour all public places will be shut and transport stopped. NAZI INTERRUPTION. On Tuesday evening, the leader of the Rumanian State, General Antonescu, issued a proclamation to the nation which was read over the Rumanian wireless. He began by asking the nation to support him. He declared j that he received lite leadership of his : country at one of the most difficult i moments in history, and had struggled * to secure the frontiers in the hour of i peril.

He continued: "Before God and the nation 1 confess that these four months of Government have been the most difficult that a man could withstand for his country, I have founded a legendary movement. . ."

Listeners reporting the broadcast state that at this point the announcer stopped, and, though the station was on the air, there was silence for five minutes, followed by German and Italian communiques.
