A SERIOUS PROBLEM. i USE OF PRISONERS OF WAR j SUGGESTED. ißy Telegraph—Press Association.' AUCKLAND. January 20. j That New Zealand should solve the | problem of the serious shortage of farm j labour by using prisoners of war was suggested at today's meeting of the Auckland Primary Production Council by the chairman. .Mr. R. C. Clark, who j
said that the use of Italian prisoners I on Dominion farms would greatly as- j sist the war effort and render valuable; service to the Empire. Replying to an j interjection that it would be unwise to I introduce such a scheme. Mr. Clark i said: "We might be driven to a great■ many things we would not want to do i ordinarily." "We must be careful," said Mr. S. I. Crookes. "My suggestion is only a recommendation r to the National Council of Primary production. It is for them to j approach' the Government and for the • Government to make a decision,” replied Mr. Clark. •' After a discussion indicating a divi- • sion of opinion a motion on the lines [ of Mr. Clark's suggestion was carried i with some dissentients.
