YEARLING SALES
A SLOW MARKET. TOP PRICE 525 GUINEAS. (By Telegraph—Press Association/! WELLINGTON. This Day. World conditions were immediately reflected in the opening of the 15th an- ' nual national yearling sales at TrenI tham yesterday. I; was a slow, drag- : ging sale, with no demand at all for I anything but the best lots. The top I prices were 525gns and 500gns respecj tively. The former mark was reached jby a colt by Nightmarch from the Lirnond mare Variant, purchased by the Wanganui trainer W. H. Dwyer for Mr G. A. Lang. Wellington. Mr Lang i; one of the partners in Globe Trotter, who is now in Dwyer's stable. The next highest price was paid by Dr. McGregor Grant, of Auckland, for a col’ j by the new sire Broiefori out of Col- ■ umba. thus a half-brother to the same I owner's colt Phaleron. The third highest price was also credited to Auckland. Mr R. Cuthbert of Dargaville, paying 425gns for a colt by Mr Standfast from the unraced Rosenor mare I Cockeye. To this family belongs the G.N. Foal Stakes winner Rencontre and Ashby (Avondale Stakes). Auckland had a good deal to do with ' the most spirited bidding of the day as in addition to the three purchases j mentioned the Takanini trainer. F , Smith, purchased a brother to Vali-mec-n for 325gns. a brother to the Now . Zealand Cup winner. Sorenata. for | 356gns. and a bay colt by Broiefort— j Merial for ISOgns. Mr L. J. Hyde. A. L. < Seifert and R. Mush, of the Waikato, and Mr L. Hunt. Auckland, were also buyers. .Australia operated only sparingly. Five lots were purchased by their representatives. Mr M. Gearin. Sydney bought three: a bay colt by Spiral — Imposture for 250gns a bay filly by Man's Pal from Halo for WOgns and J a chestnut filly by Portofino from Gol-j den Isa for 150gns. J. T. Jamieson paid j IGOgns for a bay filly by Posterity from Lavish, and Mr G. Hyman. Victoria. 270gns for a brown colt by Ringmaster from Lover's Lane.
Conditions were not favourable. The weather was humid and threatening in the morning with light showers, and in the afternoon it became more threaten-
ing and later heavy rain set in. causing a postponement for the day after lot 91. which included several not offered, whereas it. was scheduled to roach lot 130 for the day. To this and the fact also (hat a large number of the lots wore by untried sires, must be attributed the reluctance of buyers to operate more freely. Many of the lots offered were undersized and backward.
j but. al the same time there were some . i attractive individuals. Right through- , j out, the market was steadily in favour j of buyers, and they secured many barj gains. , i A Trentham Purchase. *| Mr L.
