GERMAN THREATS
INCREASED RAIDING IN PACIFIC
REPORTED PRESSURE ON JAPAN
USE OF PORTS & NAVAL BASES.
(By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright 1 (Received This Day. 12.35 p.m.) NEW YORK. January 19. “Germans in the Far East confidently predict that within a month the activities of German raiders in the South Pacific will be at least doubled." says the “New York Times" Shanghai correspondent. The German Ambassador in Tokio called a conference there of all German naval and mercantile marine officers for a discussion, it is believed of an extension of the raiders' activities and the replenishment of their supplies. It is understood that the Germans are pressing the Japanese to allow a free hand in the use of Japanese ports and naval bases for refuelling and supply.
The captains of numerous neutral and Allied ships en route to Shanghai from the South Seas report that they picked up extraordinary radio messages, ostensibly between German raiders and a central broadcasting station secreted either in Japanese Mandated territory or close to it.
