Mr S. G. Holland, Loader of the Opposition, left Wellington by last night’s steamer express on his return to Christchurch.

The Registrar of the Masterton branch of the Social Security Department. Mr J. L. L. Wood, is at present on annual leave. Mr W. O. Hawke is Acting-Registrar during ?.lr Wood's absence. Captain R, B. Schulze, who has held staff appointments at District Headquarters, Wellington, and at Trentham Camp since the outbreak of war. has been promoted to the rank of Major and is appointed General Staff Officer. In view of his absence from the country through serving with the New Zealand Military Forces. Second Lieutenant John D. W. Ormond, of Waipukurau. has forwarded his resignation from the Patangata County Council, of which he has been a member for eight years.

The friends of Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Armstrong will be pleased to learn that their son, Ron. (a member of the R.A.F.) who was injured in a crash on night operations in England and suffered a fracture of the jaw and nose and the loss of teeth, was not seriously hurt. He is reported as being very popular with his English colleagues.

Lieutenant A. L. Hibbs. D.C.M.. Unit Commander of the Home Guard for Maslerton. leaves tomorrow for Foxton. where he will attend the refresher course to be held for officers of the Home Guard. The 'course will last a week, and during Mr Hibbs’s absence the unit will be under the command of Lieutenant Raymond Lee.
