CARTERTON

HOME GUARD LARGE ATTENDANCE AT PARADE. ("Times-Age” Special.) There was a large attendance at the Home Guard parade last evening at the State Theatre. After receiving useful instruction in the hall, the company was taken for a route march from the hall by way of the back streets, thence through High Street and back to the theatre where they werd dismissed. The men acquitted themselves well in their drill. SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION SUCCESSFUL CARD PARTY.

> The card party organised by the committee of the Home and Schools' Association was held in the Band Room last evening. There was a good attendance and an enjoyable time was spent. Prizes were won as follow:— Ladies: Miss V. Bailey 1. Mrs Hooper 2. Men’s section: Mrs Thompson 1. Mr W. Ticchurst 2. Prolific Crops of Hay. Some farmers are having difficulty in getting their crops of hay cut. so fully employed are the mowing machines. Many who have had in former years only three or four stacks of hay have this year from eight to ten. On some farms lucerne and clover paddocks are being cut for second ■crops. Pressing machines are working from daylight till dark. Busy Time at Meat Works. Sheep and lambs are going into the Waingawa Freezing Works in such large numbers at present that four chains are fully employed. Dance at Belvedere. A dance will be held in the schoolroom, Belvedere, on Friday evening. These gatherings are always popular and there should be a large attendance. Good music, floor and supper will be provided.
