A CRACK RINK BEATEN

With the greens freshened after yesterday's rain, play started today in the fours championship at the New Zealand bowling tournament. Sectional games will continue until Thursday with two games each day. There is an entry of 184. or 736 players, compared with 136 at the championships in Christchurch in 1936. and 172 at Wellington last year.

Among notable players taking par* are R. Haworth, who has twice previously skipped a Canterbury four to victory, H. Wilson < Linwood) who skipped the 1938 champions and the 1934 champions, and the Onehunga four, skipped by F. Livingstone, which took the title last year.

Post-sectional play will start on Friday. and the games will be on the twolife principle. The Sydenham four, skipped by L. Dewar, secured one of the big wins scored in the first game, boating F. J. Dann (Beckenham). 36-15. W. Anderson 'Dunedin) accounted for W. Sprosen’s Linwood four by 37 points to 13. and the Canterbury four, under R. Haworth, won 38-12 against W. Uro (Auckland).

F. C. H. Williams 'Shirley) beat E. C. Pirie (Port Ahuriri). 38-13, and A. S. McDougall's Caversham four beat Ryan's Rangiora rink by 31 to 7. The Onehunga men, skipped by Livingstone had a clear win from A. J. Green (Westport i. and another champion to have success was 11. Hilson. whoso Linwood four beat T. Lock (Khandallah). 25-20, Phil Munn's Canterbury four also won comfortably. The day started off with the usual thrills, the first being the defeat of the erack Auckland rink, R. V. Warman. R. Campbell. G. A. Deare. and W. Bremner, by J. Currie. J. D. Best, and D. Stevenson, skipped by the Taieri veteran. Av. Carswell, the final score being 24-20. Carswell took his second game 30-10 against T. Poole 'Amberley).

C. Spearman (R.S.A., Christchurch) started well by taking his first two games. He beat J. Scott (Sydenham). 24-19 and J. N. Stephenson 'Nelson'. 32 19.

J. Veitch (Dunedin) opened well by defeating A. S. Mclnnes (Tomuka). 2717 but ho went down. 24-19. to A. S. Watkins 'Christchurch) in the afternoon.

W. D. Ramsay (Shirley), who won all his eight section games last year in Wellington, went down. 29-18. to A, Bell (Tauranga) in the morning game, but won his second against J. Conder (Lyall Bay). 25-19.

On the Elmwood green A. E. H. Christie 'Cashmere) beat C. Madsen (Opawa). 28-25. in the morning game but went down. 24-23, to J. R. Smith (Kelburn) in the afternoon.

A Hokitika four skipped by J. S Bain beat E. C. La Frantz (MataD. 25-18. in the morning and T. Satterthwaite (Spreydon) 23-20. in the afternoon.

On the United No. 1 green another West Coast team skipped by E. R. Moss (Karoro) won both its games, defeating S. J. Sneddon (Linwood) in the morning and T. Hubbard (Caversham' in the afternoon.

The second highlight of the day came when F. Livingstone 'Onehunga) lost one of his lives. In the morning game he won from A. J. Green 'Westport). 28-23. but A. G, Spiers 'St. Kilda) ran out ahead 23-22 in the afternoon game.

R. S. Higginbotham (Ponsonby) lost his morning game to T. F. Chambers <Sumner). 23-13. but won 32-8 against J. Holgate ( Morningion' in the afternoon.

D. H. Thomson (Phoenix. Oamaru) beat the hard-driving West Coaster L G. Mercer 24-18. in the morning, but could not hold A S. McDougall (Cav-

A game watched with interest was that between R. Haworth (Canterbury) and J. D. Marks (Christchurch). It proved no contest, however, as the former ran out an easy winner. 29-11. this being his second win for the day. The Dunedin skip K. Morrison, notched two wins. He beat E. C. Scales (Ashbury), 26-22, and R. Burgess (Woolston), 26-18. R. E. McNish (Canterbury), another of the early choices to be among the finalists, scored his two wins against I’. G. Fox (Christchurch). 29-12, and M. J. Casey < Thorn don 27-18. The first eight scored was got by W J. Crawford 'Otago', playing against L. Goldfinch (Wellington), but despite this handicap the Wellington skip tied on the last head and eventually won the game.
