CARTERTON
RACING CLUB MONTHLY MEETING OF STEWARDS. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the stewards of the Carterton Racing Club was held last night and presided over by the president. Mr W. Howard Booth. There were also present: Messrs L. H. Smart. Geo. H. Eaton. E. J. Matson. P. Bain, H. J. Brown, R. G. Kemble. J. C. Harp, P, A. Cole, G. A. Vincent. C. •Jensen, A. V. Robinson. W. C. Deller. J. Johnston and the secretary. Mr H. Mortensen. An apology for absence was received from Mr A. O. Abbott.
The treasurer reported an overdraft at the Bank of New Zealand of £735. The receipts since the last meeting totalled £159 19s sd.
Accounts amounting to £l4 18s 5d were passed for payment. It was resolved that the closing time for nominations and acceptances foi the annual race meeting be 9 o’clock. Five new members were accepted, The Wellington District Committee wrote stating that the programme of races for the forthcoming meeting had been approved. The Minister of Internal Affairs replying to correspondence in regard to a rebate of the one per cent totalisator tax: stated that this could not be allowed owing to war conditions, Mr O'Brien wrote stating that he would be pleased to act as handicapper for the races. It was resolved that the usual procedure be adopted in regard to the publican’s booth. The question of tea rooms and soft drinks and ice cream stall was left to the secretary to arrange. Mr S. Clancy was appointed clerk of the course.
It was decided to engage Cunningham’s broadcasting machine providing a first class announcer could be procured.
The arranging of loose boxes for visiting horses was left to the secretary to attend to. It was decided that Messrs Merrell and Fox '»e asked for n quote for their indicator'totalisator. A vote t of thanks was accorded Mr J. C. Harp for his efforts in disposing of hay on the course. The next meeting will be held on Friday. February 14.
Failure of Electric Light
Last evening when meetings were being held and shops were open, the electric light failed on four occasions for a brief period each time.
Personal Items.
Miss- A. Livingstone, who has been doing missionary work in China for the past 20 years, is at present the guest of her aunt, Mrs Dryden, West Tara t ahi.
Paddy's Market.
A meeting of ladies is convened for Wednesday, January 15, at 3 p.m. in the P. & A. Society’s Rooms, Carterton. for the purpose of organising a Paddy's Market in connection with a gala day to bo held on Saturday, February 22. on the Carterton Showgrounds. This function will be held in conjunction with the Ponatahi-Ahia-ruhe annual sports gathering and is for the purpose of organising funds for the Heart to Heart Appeal. It is anticipated that there will be a large attendance of ladies at the meeting on Wednesday next.
