AWARDED SCOUT BRONZE
CROSS HIGHEST AWARD FOR HEROISM. LONG SWIM TO SAVE COMPANIONS. <By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND. This Day. For conspicuous bravery on November 23. Patrol Leader Raymond Nilsen. 15. of St. Heliers. was decorated by the Dominion Chief Scout (Viscount Galway). with the bronze cross for gallantry. the highest award for heroism in the Boy Scout movement. The boy was accompanied to Government House by his parents and the Acting-Dominion Chief Boy Scout Commissioner. Sir Joseph Smith. Nilsen’s swim of two miles and a half to secure help, which resulted in two companions being saved after clinging’ to an overturned boat for three hours, was described at the time as one of the most gallant feats in the history of Waitemata Harbour. Unfortunately help arrived too late to save Nilsen's brother, who was drowned.
