GRASS FIRE OUTBREAK NEAR RAILWAY LINE. ("Times-A'"i” Special.j After the 2.30 p.rn. mail train left die Carterton station yesterday an alarm • was sounded on the fire siren and the brigade turned out to a grass fire which originated near the railway line in the vicinity of the Pembroke Street crcssirig. The firemen were quickly on the scene and subdued the outbreak which had got into dry grass in a paddock behind the property of the Misses Watterson. Had there been any wind the fire may have proved more serious. It is thought that a cigarette butt thrown from the window of a carriage may have been the cause of the fire.
