gill. from Hokitika to Napier, bowlers ; in their hundreds started play today in I the New Zealand bowling championi ships which are being held in Christj church over the next fortnight. The ■ entries, totalling 856. are a record for : the South Island, and have only once ' before been bettered in New Zealand, j at .Auckland in 1939. when they totali led 1000. The tournament opened with play ; in the singles. The pairs will start oh j Friday and on Monday the fours will i begin. The finals will be held over ' the last week of the tournament. All last year’s winners are defending their titles and many former chami pions are competing. After the prot longed spell of dry. hot weather in I Christchurch the greens are fas’, and i arc drawing well. At the end of play 66 players were ; left in and their elimination games will ■be continued throughout tomorrow. As usual there were many surprises. , chief among them being the eliinina- ; tion of last year’s winner, G. Dearc • Carlton. .Auckland!. Deare lost his first life in the fourth round, when he was beaten after a great game by a Cashmere player. A. E. H. Christie. 16-14. In the last round of the day he went down to another local player.
