I "I Was An Adventuress," which will ■ be shown tomorrow night once more i presents Zorina, whose performance in ; "On Your Toes" gave promise of a new i and different screen personality. Her J latest film shows that this promise has ' been fulfilled. for she plays the part of . the pseudo Countess Vronksy with polish and intelligence. Countess Vronj sky is a beautiful young woman whose I subtle ways of selling and re-selling a j worthless pendant of would-be antii quity is a source of pride and income ito her mentor and his assistant. Erich j von Stroheim plays the part of Andre. a professional crook who has taken the countess from a third-rate ballet troupe and trained her in his own ways till she is a sophisticated woman of the world. Peter Lorre takes the part of Andre's assistant and slave, j whose peasant dullness is lit every now I and then with, a shrewdness which l finally outwits even the clever Andre, i The countess, playing her game, falls ■ in love with her latest victim <Richard I Greene), decides to reform and marI ries him. As Mrs Paul Vernay she is I lost sight of for a time by her former j companions, but eventually they catch jup with her and in spite of protesta- ■ lions, install themselves as guests in j her magnificent home, where a house i party is in progress. The girl., who j knows only too well that they have I plans to rob her guests of their jewelj lery, is at her wits’ end to know what jto do, but still cannot bring herself to i tell her husband. The problem is solI ved for her. however, when he be- ■ comes suspicious and the disappearf ance of the gems shows him that he is ' right. The thieves get away with the ' loot, and the husband and wife follow ■ them in a spectacular motor-car chase ! which ends in happiness for the young j couple. The dialogue is bright and j witty, and the comedy moments arc ! many. Every actor gives a polished i performance, and Zorina dances again , -—this time "Swan Lake." with all the > virtuosity and natural genius which | has made her such an internationally I famous character.
