VERBENA
A SHOWY FLOWER. One of the showiest of herbaceous jx-retmials for summer flowering is the verbena They arc not (ussy regarding soil or situation, but given light, rich soil in a warm, sunny position, plenty of water in hot weather and an occasional dressing of manure round the roots, they will flower nearly all the year, and particularly well during the warm months. They should be cut hard' after flowering—this will induce new growth and more blooms. Tne verbena can be propagated by means of rooted cuttings or by layering, and. of course, by seeds sown in autumn or spring. The cuttings should bo taken from the tip of the shoots, at the join of the old and new wood.
