CARTERTON

OBITUARY MR HENRY COOK. (“Times-Age" Special.) After a serious illness lasting two months there died at the Greytown Hospital last evening an old and highly respected Wairarapa resident. Mr Henry Cook, of Carterton at the age of 85 years. Three weeks ago he became critically ill and acting upon medical advice entered the Grey town Hospital. During the past two days his conditic t became worse and he passed quitely away last night. Born in London on March 25 the late Mr Cook left England in 18G8 being then 13 years of age. in the sailing ship Wild Duck, with his parents and other members of the family. They landed at Wellington but did not remain long in the city, his father, the late Mr W .Cook, and family leaving for Nelson where they resided for many years. Deceased gained all his schooling in Nelson and when 18 years of age left his home for the Wairarapa taking up his residence in Greytown. Three years afterwards he married Miss Sarah Jane Harris. There were three children. Messrs Ernest Henry and William Rowland Cook , both of

whom are dead, and Mrs H. Workman who lives in Belvedere Street. Carterton. The late Mr Cook was a painter bytrade, which occupation he relinquished several years since. Deceased was caretaker of the gentleman’s club (the first club in Grey town) which was burned down and never re-erected. He afterwards became custodian to the present Working Men's Club in Greytown which position he held for many years. During his residence in Greytown he was a valued member of St. Luke's Church choir and took a keen interest in many social and glee clubs. He had since 1877 taken a keen interest in Friendly Society work. In 1877 he joined Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows, when he was a resident of Moroa, Grey town, afterwards joining the Grey town Lodge of Foresters of which order he was a member at the, |,-me of his death. Deceased was a brilliant billiards player and was at one time probably the best in Wairarapa. His father left New Zealand for Sydney some years after his residence in Nelson and died there at the age of 82 years, Deceased is survived by a widow and a daughter .There are fifteen grand children and eleven great I grandchildren alive today. Much sympathy is felt for Mrs Cook I and nei daughter in their bereavement J The funeral will take place tomorrow j leaving ‘King’s Mortuary Chapel, Broadway, after a service commencing! at 1 o’clock, for the Clareville Come-I tery.

Underhill, who was in Auckland over the Christmas and New Year holidays, has returned to Carterton. Mr H, Hudson, of Levin, was a visitor to Carterton yesterday. Mrs J. Allen, of Hamilton, is at present spending a holiday with her daughter, Mrs R. J. McCann. Garrison Street. Carterton. The late Mr. Bertie William Rcnall. who recently met his death as the result of an accident, was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Renall.. ■ Westborne." Parkvale, who are amongst the oldest and most respected residents of the district. Born at Kokotau in 1904. ho spent his whole life in the district \ and was held in high esteem by al!; who came in contact with him. At the time of his death he was a director of the local factory, secretary of the Pig Club, treasurer of the hail committee and a very keen member of the Jersey Breeders’ Association. In 15)27 he married Miss Thelma Doreen, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. li Hodder, Brooklyn Rond. Carterton. He leaves a widow and four small sons. Mi-rvyn Alfred, lan Garth. Greytown-grown raspberries are being consigned in large quantities from) the local railway station to Auckland; and other centres The crop this season! has been a good one
