GEORGE. j The golden wedding of Mr and .Mrs j A. W. George, of Tawaha. was celej orated on New Year's Day. when about I 90 guests were present. I A son of a pioneer who landed at Petone in 1840, Mr George was born ! in Clareville and spent his early life j m the Carterton district sawmilling. In I 1890 he married Miss Annie Sophia Burgess. The bride was attended by her sister. Misses Mary Burgess (who was present on this occasion), ana Mary Helen George * the groom’s sister). The best man was Mr George Frederick George (brother). After their marriage Air and Mrs George departed by horse and trap to take up residence in Masterton. In 1911 they came to Tawaha and took up farming. Mr George has been a director of the Tawaha Dairy Company for 30 years and chairman for several years past. I A large marquee was erected on the lawn, and a wedding breakfast proviaed. A handsome two-decker cake made by Mrs Hannah (daughter) was decorated with the flowers similar to those on the cake at the wedding. Mr Jack George (uncle), of Pahiatua, who is 86 years of age was the oldest relative present. Mr David Murray proposed the i toast of the bride and bridegroom, and i Mr A. W. George that of the bridesmaids and best man. Other family toasts were duly honoured. Mr and Mrs George were the recipients of many handsome gifts from the family and guests as well as many congratulatory messages. The only absentees were relatives now serving in the army and navy in the present war. Vital Statistics. The vital statistics for the year 1940. recorded by the Registrar 'Air A. O. Pike) are as follow, the figures for 1939 being in parentheses):—Births, 48 (34); marriages. 22 (23); deaths. 13 (7).
