PIPE BAND UNIFORMS j i I (To the Editor.) Sir, —Judged by their musical efforts j lon New Year's Eve, the Pipe Band ofj 1 the St Andrew's Society is probably i as good as we shall ever hear in Masj terton. There was not much that ' could be said for the appearance of I the bandsmen, however, excepting that i the spectacle of their parading the ! town in varied civil garb, some ar-I .[rayed in hats (one piper actually! 1 sporting a Tommy Stetson), others; with bared heads, was calculated to ! fill a genuine Scotsman with shame. | '-Now. it is never easy al the best of , times to hold a decent band together, 1 and in the case of the Pipe Band it is 4 ; | going to be more difficult than usual! I to do so. unless it can be arranged for | them to be supplied with traditional' 'dress for their public appearances, and' | it would be interesting to hear what . i the St Andrew's Society has to say on ; ■ the subject of kills. Hearsay indicates [ | that individual pipers have offered' (substantial amounts as the solid nu-! I deus of a fund to provide kilts, al I superb gesture that speaks eloquently j [ of the enthusiasm and untiring energy; ( of the pipers, especially in view of the fact that the pipers have to provide and maintain their own instruments, and pay for the hire of their practice i hall and other incidentals, and the offer might have been followed up with i advantage by the St Andrew’s So-j ciely It is noted that directors of the' 1 society are splendidly adorned with', kilts, while no difficult) - seems to have been experienced n providing the[ local Women's Choir with ceremonial ■ garments. What is wrong then with . the society making an immediate and wholehearted effort to have the pipers; fitted out with suitable clothing' 1 In ; ( such an event it would be i haggis; to a bawbee on pipers falling over! themselves to give regular service, and ■ it would be a certain means of ensurmg a permanent band.---I am. etc.. ) Aid, SCOTCH Masterton.
