FOR THE HOUSEWIFE. .After a spell of rain, do not leave wet umbrellas unopened for a long period. Dry them well, roll them, and thus preserve the material. A tiled fireplace should not be washed with soap and water. Instead, rub over daily with a rag dipped in turpentine.

To cover jams, use soft tissue-paper dipped in milk. Put it over the jam at once, when the heal will dry it. making it like parchment. Put a block of camphor in each corner of a room that is inclined to be damp. This draws out the dampness.

Put breadcrumbs tied in muslin, about the size of an egg. with cabbage. Cabbage cooked in this way is easily digested, and the breadcrumbs absorb almost all the smell of the cabbage while cooking.

A pinch of bicarbonate of coda added when stewing fruit saves sugar.
