Frost in Masterton. A frost of 3.8 degrees was registered in Masterton yesterday morning. Christmas Bowling Tournament. In a final which lasted only 18 ends the Lyall Bay four skipped by Hazelwood won the Wellington Christmas fours bowling tournament from the Kelburn four skipped by Blighting, 26-12. The game for third prize between the runners-up was won by the Hataitai four skipped by Wellings'
New Zealand Chess Congress, The Chess Congress advanced a further stage at Timaru yesterday, hi the championship the results were:— Seventh round: Dr. Bennett (Otago) beat Ncwrick (Auckland), P. Allerhand (Wellington* beat Vincent. R. Wade (Wellington) beat C. Lennard (Auckland). Eighth round: Bennett beat Vincent. Points at the end of the seventh session: Wade 6. Allerhand 51. Bennett 3i. Abandoning his annual cycling tour of various j arts of the Dominion, the Speaker of the House of Represem tatives and member for Napier fthc Hon. W. E. Crooning Condemned. Crooning was roundly condemned by Dr, C. Edgar Ford when addressing the Rotary Club in Auckhmd. He described the practice as positively either vulgar or stupid, or both.
