GLUT IN FRUIT MARKET PICKING SUSPENDED. ("Times-Age” Special.) Owing to a glut in the small fruit market and the holidays the picking of fruit in the Wairarapa has been temporarily suspended until after New Year. WOMEN’S DIVISION WEEKLY CARD PARTY. The weekly card party organised by the committee of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union in aid of soldiers’ comforts, was held on Saturday evening. The prize-winners were: — Ladies. Miss Arcus 1; Mrs Lenihan 2. Men, Mr Holland 1; Mrs Page 2. Oppressive Heat. The heat experienced in Carterton on Saturday was very oppressive. During the afternoon 87 degrees were registered in the shade and at 5 o’clock it was 105 in the sun. The swimming baths, rivers and streams in the district were well patronised. Wild Pigs Plentiful. Wild pigs are reported to be plentiful in the Tararua Ranges and shooting parties report good sport. Boy Cyclist Injured. On Sunday afternoon a boy named Garrett, living in Cobden Road, Belvedere, was the victim of an accident which, fortunately, was not attended with serious results. He was cycling from his home to town, and when opposite the county yard in Belvedere Street was struck by a motor car travelling in the same direction. The boy was thrown heavily to the road, suffering abrasions and bruises. He was attended by Dr Wells and taken to Croydon Hospital where his injuries were dressed. Later he returned to his home. Bowling. Four rinks played interesting games on a very fast green on Saturday. The heat was trying. Afternoon tea was supplied by the club. The results of games were as follow: Wicks, Kilmister, Martin (s) beat Booth, Hawker, Barr (s), 24/13; McCarty, Pankhurst, IjAtfbould, Sorensen (s) beat Smith, SjFrmer. Hill, Bain (s), 24/17; Lindop, Colson, Riggs, W. Steven (s) beat Boden, A. Thompson, Harrington (s), 20/17; Dudson, G. Steven, De Lacey, Stent (s) beat White, Clarke, Harris, Whyte (s), 31/11. Personal. Miss Leta McKnight, of Wellington, is visiting Carterton for the holidays and is staying with her parents in Dixon Street. Mrs J. McKnight is visiting Auckland, and is the guest of her sister, Mrs L. Smith. Good Fishing. Many local residents are spending the holidays along the sea coast from Castlepoint to Cape Palliser. One party yesterday caught over 100 blue cod and a large groper. Late Jas. Hannah. The funeral of the late Mr Jas. F. Hannah took place on Saturday, and was well attended. The Rev. W. F. Stent conducted the service at the graveside. The ,pall bearers, members of the Druids’ Lodge of whom deceased was an old member, were Bros. N. Hannah (nephew), C. Miller (son-in-law), D. McPhee. P. Hodder, H. Hooder and J. M. Nicholls. The Druids’ funeral ritual was read by the Arch Druid, Bro. W. Fryer.
