CHRISTMAS DAY TRAGEDY CAR CAPSIZES DOWN BANK. A SOLDIER KILLED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NELSON, December 26. A fatal accident occurred on Cable Bay road yesterday afternoon when a car in which a family party was driving went off the road and capsized down the bank. Five of the seven occupants were admitted to hospital, where one member of the New Zealand Forces, home on leave, died from his injuries last night. The man who was killed was: — Private William Burke, aged 30 years. He suffered concussion to the chest, and a fractured right arid, and died from asphyxia due to congestion of the lungs. The injured were:— Robert Kean, aged 62, service station proprietor, lacerated scalp wounds and concussion, condition serious. Mrs. Christina Kean, aged 60, wife of Robert Kean, abrasions of the face and contusions right leg, condition satisfactory. Mrs. Jocelyn Kean, aged 28, shock and a lacerated wound to her jaw, condition satisfactory. Bruce Kean, son of Mrs. J. Kean, aged 15 months concussion and contusions to the head, condition fairly serious. The party left Nelson early yesterday afternoon. Returning about 3.30 p.m., the car, driven by Mr. Kean, sen., went off the road about three miles from Cable Bay beach and rolled over twice before becoming held upside down by some trees. The doors were forced open and all the occupants were thrown out and down the bank. •Private Burke died in hospital at 11 o’clock last night. Both his parents are dead and he has no relatives in New Zealand. He was a well-known soccer player and last season was captain of the Athletic senior team which won the Nelson championship; he was also a provincial representative.

FOUR PEOPLE INJURED

COLLISION AT CORNER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, December 26. Injuries which were not serious were received by four people in a collision between two cars at the corner of Karamu Road and Alexandra Crescent. Hastings. Those concerned were: Mr. Roy Mcllroy. Clive, cuts and abrasions. Miss Peggy Mcllroy. Clive, cuts and Miss Margaret Mcllroy, Clive, bruises and shock. Mrs. Alice Fergusson, abrasions and shock. Though Mr. Mcllroy and one of his two daughters. Miss Peggy Mcllroy, were admitted to Hastings Memorial Hospi tai, they have been discharged.
