A BIG DAY
VOLUNTEER FIREMEN’S WORK. HELP PUT OUT LONDON RAID FIRES. When air-raid fires are started in London, calls for help may be sent out over a wide area. The first Thamesside London fire caused by an incendiary bomb gave more than one country brigade a chance to prove its mettle when up against something really big. Many people laughed at Teddy Martin when he started the Newbury (Berkshire) volunteer fire brigade 25 years ago. “It would be quicker to get an engine from London,” they said. But Teddy lived to see the day when his brigade went 60 miles to help to put out a fire in London. For Chief Officer Edward Martin's men had become expert fire fighters. “We were the only volunteer fire bl igade there,” Teddy said this week, “and our engine was the biggest of the fifteen provincial brigades called out with us. “It took us only two hours to reach our station. The organisation was magnificent. They gave us a hydian right away and in two minutes e boys were pouring water on a blazing factory. “They worked all night and came back here this morning. They have got to get on with their own jobs now.
