TODAY’S PLAY IMPROVEMENT IN AUCKLAND BATTING. PEARSON SCORES WELL. WELLINGTON, This Day.’ The wicket and ground were becoming faster under the influence of sun and wind for the resumption of the Auckland-Wellington match on the Basin Reserve today. Auckland’s fourth wicket pair. Pearson and Scott, made good use of the early period of play and scored well off the bowling of Downes and Parsloe. In half an hour the score improved by 32 runs, at which stage the first bowling change was made, Lamason relieving Downes. It was not until a further change, when Downes went' on at the other end, that a solid looking partnership was broken, Scott being caught on the leg side. The partnership yielded a valuable 50 runs to Auckland’s account. Pearson continued to make good progress, his scoring efforts including occasional boundary strokes. He passed the half-century mark and received able support from Cleal. By 12.5 p.m. Auckland’s score had reached 119 for four wickets not out 55, Scott, c Parsloe, b Downes 21, Cleal not out 14, extras 7.) The fifth wicket partnership was one of free batting and was not broken until Cleal was well held by Burnette after snicking one of Parsloe’s deliveries a little too high. Cleal had contributed 58 runs, including 3 fours in his total when the partnership was dissolved. Pearson’s total was 68 and he increased this further before the luncheon adjournment by only two runs before being dismissed by Parsloe. At the tea adjournment the total was 196 for 6 wickets. TODAY’S PLAY. BURGESS TROUBLES BATSMEN. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The representative cricket match, Canterbury versus Otago, was continued today in fine weather. Resuming with seven wickets down for 203, Toomey (2) and Mills (2) both appeared to bo making good use of the fast hard pitch, with Scott bowling from the north end instead of Westwood. Toomey swept a short-pitched ball to the fence for the first boundary of the morning. He was gaining confidence, (though Mills still refused to risk anything. Another bowling change at the south end saw the left-hand spinner Burgess replace Scott and trouble both batsmen. He was tossing them up well and flighting deceptively. There was applause all round the ground when Burgess, in his fourth over of the morning, induced Toomey to hit one straight back and Burgess held a hot shot, down near the ground one handed. Toomey scored only a single off Burgess . The score at noon was 245 for eight wickets (Toomey c and b Burgess. 29; Mills, not out, 10; Leadei, not out, 3; extras, 25).
