CHRISTMAS EVE
CHANGE IN WEATHER BRINGS RAIN.
QUEEN STREET THRONGED.
Following sultry, trying heat, scattered showers driven by a strong south-westerly wind fell in Masterton on Christmas Eve as late shopping reached its rush period. By 7 o’clock the wind had veered to the south and developed into a typical southerly. Queen Street, which had been roped 1 off for the convenience of pedestrians presented a particularly busy sight. When the rain started, however, people were driven to seek the shelter of the footpaths, which became congested and progress was made difficult. The shops were well-filled and most business houses report excellent trade. The crowd, although dampened, remained in' festive spirits. After the closing of .the shops the street soon cleared of people.
