LEVEL CROSSING ACCIDENT MOTOR CAR AND RAIL CAR COLLIDE. CHRISTMAS DAY TRAGEDY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, December 25. Four persons were killed this afternoon when a light sedan car was struck by the New Plymouth-Welling-ton railcar on a level crossing near Eltham. They were: — Mr. Leonard Archibald McPhail, aged 47, farmer, Ngaere. He was the driver. A , . Mrs. June McPhail, aged 74, his mother. Mrs. Madge Theodoris McPhail, aged 37, his wife. Margaret McPhail, aged 5, his daughter. The railcar at the point where the accident occurred usually travels at between 50 and 60 miles an hour. The force of the impact carried the car over the crossing, hurled out the occupants and reduced the vehicle to a heap of -twisted metal. Mr. McPhail lived a very short time after the crash, but all the others were killed instantly. The railcar, though damaged, was able to go on after a short delay.
