CARTERTON

ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS loyal heart of oak lodge. (“Times-Age” Special.) The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge held last evening was presided over by Sister F. Eagle, N.G. Sick pay (£6 13s 4d), Social Security sick pay £29 ss), and other accounts amounting to £6O 14s 3d were . passed for payment. t The season’s greetings were received Atom Dr. W. J. C. Wells and Dr. R. N. Campbell, the Grand Master of New Zealand, Bro. N. B. and Sister Phyllis Bellringer, New Plymouth, and from Oamaru Lodge. The secretary was authorised to suitably acknowledge the good wishes. One member declared off the lodge sick funds and one member sent a certificate notifying that he was still unable to work. A letter of recommendation was issued to Bro. C. E. Wiseley, Levin. Bro. H. H. L. Meyrick notified that he had been transferred to Frankton Junction Railway Station, and conveyed the season’s greetings to members. The N.G. extended Christmas greetings to officers and members, which was reciprocated by the Vice Grand. After business a social was held. FIRE BRIGADE MEMBER ENTERTAINED. A social was held in the Fire Brigade station last evening when occasion was taken to give Fireman R. O’Keefe a send-off. The' guest of the evening, who belongs to the R.A.F., is on leave from camp. Superintendent Wakelin presided and at a suitable interval in the proceedings addressed those present stating that Fireman O'Keefe was a capable member of the brigade and wishing him the best of luck in the Air Force. On behalf of members of the Brigade he asked their guest to accept a cigarette case. Leading Aircraftsman O’Keefe, whose health was toasted with musical honours, suitably returned thanks. PATRIOTIC EFFORT The lamb sold at the Carterton sale yards on behalf of Miss Annette Fairbrother realised the sum of £4 Is, it being sold and re-sold. ’ MR J. A. T. STEVENS SERVICE EULOGISED. Mr J. A. T. Stevens, of Wakelin Street, Carterton, has received a very welcome letter of appreciation from the Secretary of the Wellington Education Board, Mr W. I. Deavoll,’ in recognition of his long service as a member of the Carterton District High School Committee —a period of 26 years. The letter received read as 'follows: “A recent survey of the election results in connection with school committees, discloses the fact that you are no longer a member. In this connection the Board desires to thank you for your years of service in promoting the educational welfare of the children. The Board freely acknowledges that this has not been done without considerable sacrifice on your part and that being so the effort is all the more praiseworthy.” Personal Items. Mr and Mrs Reg. Stevens, of Petone, will spend Christmas with Mr Steven's parents, Wakelin Street, Carterton. Mr and Mrs A. T. Murray will spend their holidays at Wanganui. Mr and Mrs P. A. Cole and Mrs Hastie and child left Carterton this afternoon for Eastbourne where they will spend the holidays. Airman Entertained. Last evening a number of residents accompanied by the Mayor (Mr D. Taverner) gathered at the Dalefiefild Dairy Co’s, building to entertain Leading Aircraftsman Randal O’Keefe, son of Mr and Mrs F. O’Keefe, who is going on active service. The Mayor extended to their guest the best of luck in his war adventure, and expressed the hope that he would safely return to Carterton whose citizens were proud of him. Mr Taverner said that he had pleasure in asking Leading Aircraftsman O'Keefe to accept a wristlet watch as a slight token of the esteem in which he was held by the citizens of Carterton. He also asked their guest to accept a parcel of woollen comforts from the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Aircraftsman O’Keefe suitably replied. _ _ Christmas Trade. ' The Carterton tradesmen as a whole report that Christmas trade is good All day yesterday a steady stream of buyers were in and out of business premises and today the town bears a very busy aspect. It is anticipated that there will be experienced tonight one of the busiest Christmas Eves Carterton has seen. Business premises will be open until 10 o’clock tonight. ~
