AIR BATTLE
ATTACK ON ENEMY BOMBERS EIGHT ITALIAN PLANES SHOT DOWN. THREE MORE PROBABLY DESTROYED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.40 a.m.) RUGBY, December 23. The British Air Force in Greece has announced that over Argyrokastron, on Saturday, nine R.A.F. fighters intercepted enemy bomber formations escorted by a large number of fighters. The bombers were attacked, but it was not possible to observe the results as immediately" afterwards the British aircraft were engaged by fifty enemy fighters. Although the British were outnumbered by more than five to one. eight enemy aircraft were definitely shot down and three more were probably destroyed. The R.A.F. lost two aircraft. The oil wells at Kukove, in Central Albania, were attacked. The attackers were met by fighters and intensive anti-aircraft fire. One enemy fighter is believed to have been shot down. BOMBING IN YUGOSLAVIA ALLEGEDLY BY BRITISH PLANE. BELGRADE, December 22. A foreign plane, believed to be British, dropped two bombs on Susak, which is linked to Fiume by a short bridge. The bombs injured eight persons. It fell 50 yards from the railway bridge, which is highly important in the transport of supplies to Italy.
