ARTILLERY DUEL

ACROSS THE MEKONG RIVER. INDO-CHINA & THAILAND CONTENTION. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day. 9.35 a.m.) BANGKOK. December 23. The High Command has reported a very violent battle in which French and Thai artillery and machine-guns fought a duel lasting forty minutes across the Mekong River, between Thakhek and Nakornpanom. The report' stated that a hundred French shells landed in Thailand without causing casualties or damage. Meanwhile the Ministry of the Interior has issued a proclamation that all natives of Laos and Cambodia are resuming Thai nationality and showing a determination to return to their motherland.

A Hanoi message says Thai artillery dropped sixty shells in Vientiane during a three hour bombardment on Sunday. Ten shells landed hi Thakhek. The French replied by firing 150 shells.
