CARTERTON

GUN ACCIDENT MR R. HAWKER INJURED. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr Ross Hawker, accompanied by companions, went rabbit shooting on Saturday afternoon at Carrington. They’ were climbing the hills when an unfortunate accident happened. Members of the party were together when one slipped on the greasy hill and the charge from his shotgun struck a rock. ■ Some of the pellets flew off the rock and entered Mr Hawker’s leg and through a heavy pair of boots into his foot. He was brought to Carterton, where Dr Wells attended to his injuries at the Croydon Hospital. All the shot has been extracted from the leg and foot and today he is doing well.

COMING OF AGE PARTY CELEBRATION AT PARKVALE. The 21st birthday of Mr Gordon Goodin of Park Road, Carterton, was celebrated at the Parkvale Hall on Saturday evening, when Mrs H. Goodin entertained a large number of relatives and friends at a dance. The guests on arrival were received by Mrs Goodin, who wore a handsome black frock. The time was spent in dancing. interspersed with vocal items pleasingly rendered by Misses Bradbury. Patterson (2), Upritchard, A. Davey of Masterton, and Messrs McKinnon and D. Jensen. Two Monte Carlo’s and a spot waltz were won by Mr and Mrs L. Nolan of Parkvale, Mr Morris and Miss Davis, and Mesdames Bradbury and Jackson respectively.

After supper everyone adjourned tc the dance hall where the guest ol honour opened the many gift parcels, Mr Goodin suitably replying. He especially thanked his mother for having provided the party. Dancing was resumed and later the health of Mr Goodin was toasted with musical honours. Miss O. W. Wolters, a very old friend of the family, proposed the health of Mr Gordon Goodin in a very suitable manner. She handed him a key to the house amid applause and the singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” The birthday cake, gaily lit with its 21 candles, was then cut by Mr Gordon Goodin and a piece handed to those present. Mrs Goodin’s health was also drunk. The gathering was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem. The music for dancing was played by Mrs V. J. Ashton. Carterton, and Mr G. Harding, Masterton. Mr Jensen made an efficient M.C.

WOMEN’S DIVISION CARD PARTY. The Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held their weekly card tourney in the band room on Saturday evening, the prizes being won by Mesdames J. Brown and Edwards and Messrs Amundsen and F. O’Keefe. Supper was provided. These card parties are becoming very popular and the ladies who control them are deserving of praise for their efforts. The whole of the proceeds are donated to the soldiers’ comforts fund.

PARKVALE SCHOOL ANNUAL PICNIC. The annual picnic of the Parkvale School was held on Saturday afternoon. There was a good attendance of parents, friends and children and a very happy day was spent by all. Lunch and afternoon tea were provided by the ladies’ committee. During the afternoon. Mr. E. Rose, on behalf of those present made a presentation to the retiring schoolmaster and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. H. Kirk. Mr. Rose spoke of the splendid work Mr. Kirk had carried out during the six years he had been a* the Parkvale School. In wishing Mr. and Mrs. Kirk many happy years in retirement, he asked them to accept an electric heater. Mr. ’ Kirk, in replying returned thanks for the splendid gift, and said how sorry Mrs. Kirk - and he were that the time had come to leave the district, as they had many pleasant memories of their residence in Parkvale. Among the guests at the birthday party on Saturday night of Mr Gordon Goodin, was his uncle, Mr Albert Goodin, of Wellington, who is well known in Carterton, having been educated in this district.
